What makes one sport more appealing than any other? Is it a favorite team, the paycheck, the teamwork, the difficulty, or the fans? Five writers from Bay Elementary School all have their favorite sports and did not hesitate to tell me why. Basketball, baseball, football, ice hockey, and soccer were all represented during this passionate roundtable discussion.

Are you a basketball fan? Patrick R. believes that a basketball player gets the most exercise during his four quarters of play and that playing on the hardwood takes true teamwork. He assured me that LeBron’s inability to pass the ball is indeed a downfall. Patrick is a Knicks fan, he considers them to be the best team in New York.

How about America’s favorite pastime? Dean B., a second-baseman himself, argued that on the diamond, a baseball player always has a job to do and can never get caught sleeping. Taking a more practical stance, he also acknowledged the hefty paycheck a baseball player sees in comparison to most other athletes. Dean, like Patrick R., defends his favorite hometown team in rooting for the Yankees.

How can we forget about football? Logan P. was eager to defend the big team spirit of football. He appreciates the fact that all players have each other’s backs during every single play. Logan P. took a different stance from his friends when he revealed his loyalty to the Atlanta Falcons because he believes they have the best receivers in the league.

Have you ever even tried to play ice hockey? Logan D. asserted that ice hockey is undoubtedly the most difficult sport to play. Besides having to get around on ice skates, a hockey player is at constant risk of getting into fights. Logan D., however, did admit that the fights are his favorite part of the sport – watching them, of course. He defended the New York Rangers as the best New York team, dismissing the Islanders because they’re actually “Brooklyn-ers.”

Isn’t soccer the most famous sport in the world? Patrick M. simply feels that soccer is the most exciting of all sports. Every goal results in an absolute uproar from the most passionate fans in the world. Body paint and stadium anthems truly define soccer as the greatest sport, according to Patrick M., a dedicated supporter of FC Barcelona because Messi is way better than Ronaldo, right?

My experience with these five boys was unforgettable, and their opinions were very intriguing. It was satisfying to see such young minds craft such mature and passionate arguments. It is obvious that Patchogue-Medford has a bright future with even brighter minds ahead.
