Should PMHS have a volleyball team for boys?

Who doesn’t like watching an exciting game of volleyball where players jump, pass, serve, and work as a team to score points against an opposing team? Volleyball is quite a big sport on Long Island. Almost every school on the Island has a female volleyball team that participates in the fall season. Unfortunately, very few schools have volleyball teams for boys, including Patchogue-Medford. Last week, a survey was posted on our Twitter page that asked users whether they would be in support of a boys’ volleyball team in our school. The results were incredible, with 90% of the voters being in favor of the establishment of a team. This raises the questions: should Patchogue-Medford High School create their own competitive boys’ volleyball team? Also, would there be enough people willing to play if a team was created?

I recently talked to two students this past week and asked them what their opinion was on the subject. One of them, Rylan Jugan, an 11th grader here at the school, stated how he would be in support of a males’ team. His reasoning for this decision was that the team would be “an additional athletic outlet for boys to participate in the sports that they’d wish.” Another 11th grade student, Ethan Franco, stated that a male volleyball team would help create equal athletic gender opportunities in the school.“Volleyball is a fun sport, why should guys not be able to play?” When discussing the possibility of a male team to other students in the school, a majority seemed to say that they liked the idea and would even join the team themselves. Others believe that with the support, our possible future team could even become a big competitor in the sport on Long Island.

Even the PMSD’s Athletic Director, Mr. Cox, is all in for the idea. “The vision of our school district is for students to discover their own unique talents. As the Athletic Director, it is essential that we afford students the opportunity to recognize their own unique talents by providing a variety of activities for them to be successful,” stated Mr. Cox through an email recently. He even said he would be willing to start talking about the formation of a team soon!

I personally believe a boys’ volleyball team in our school would be great. Our school has an outstanding girls’ volleyball program, and it would make sense to create a successful team for the opposite gender and expand opportunities for the sport. Other schools, such as Lindenhurst, Connetquot, Sachem East, and Sachem North, already have their own volleyball teams for boys that regularly compete in the fall. Varsity volleyball leagues are already set up on Long Island, we just need the support from the entire school to actually construct the team and make the idea a reality. Leave your opinion on our poll.
