The Pat-Med Varsity Field Hockey Teams lines up together for the last time before their final game under the lights. Tonight was Senior Night and those teammates were honored.

For the Raiders Varsity Field Hockey team, October 17th was the night most players will never forget. This year, six of them played their last ever game on the Patchogue-Medford turf. The seniors this year include: Mikayla Lyston, Nicole Telford, Alexis Daleo, Rachel Edwards, Alyssa Sacco, and Brianna Wassmer.

For all teams, Senior Night is an event filled with anticipation and excitement. Most of the time, there are a few tears that are shed throughout the ceremony. Even while the waterworks are underway, the RGVFH team still managed to blink away the sadness and play an outstanding final game.

Most of the members of the field hockey team have been playing together since middle school and could not imagine playing without each other. Field hockey is one of the few sports in which all three middle schools are a part of the same team. And when you play on the field with someone since seventh grade, the final game could very well be the hardest.

Since the team is very close, they had a lot of chemistry on the field which allowed them to win several games. Although there were a couple of “newbies” or underclassmen that were also on the team, the Raider Field Hockey team is “one big family” according to Coach Sacco.

Julia Tully, a first year starting freshman on Varsity, states, “The team was very welcoming and supportive this year and I will miss the seniors a lot.” Sophomore Sabrina Guarino also adds, “The whole team, especially the seniors, were quick to pick somebody up after a mistake, and we all had such a good time with so many memories throughout the whole season.”

For most girls, Senior Night will be the end of their field hockey playing days. However, for Brianna Wassmer, senior captain, she will proudly continue playing her favorite game during college.

As of now, she has been offered athletic and academic scholarships from many schools including Pace University. She is planning on majoring in nursing while also playing field hockey.

Throughout the entire game, there were awesome corners and great defense played by Gianna Gordon, Gianna Sacco, and Julia Tully.

The girls defeated Centereach 3-0 with Alyssa Sacco, Rachel Edwards, and Yasmin Rodriguez each scoring a goal.

The team played a great season with a record of 7-7-0, placing them 15th in the division. Congratulations to the RGVFH team and coaches for a great season. And to the seniors, we wish you the best of luck in wherever life continues to take you, in hopes that you will never forget the memories you have made, both on and off the field.
