Stranger Things on Netflix

Emma Smith, Staff Writer

“Stranger Things”, an homage to 1980s science fiction films, was created by the Duffer Brothers, and inspired by the works of classic 1980s science-fiction writers, such as Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King. This Netflix original drama depicts the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, set in the 1980s, shaken up after the sudden and mysterious disappearance of a young boy, by the hand of an unknown supernatural predator.
The plot of this captivating series follows the perspectives of several eccentric characters, including a small town police chief with a dark past, breaking barriers and taking risks to uncover secret government scientific experiments. As wells as a desperate mother on the verge of insanity as she goes to extremes to find her missing son. And of course our beloved and hilarious heroes, who ignite our child-like senses of wonder and adventure, a rag tag team of young boys that go from playing Dungeons and Dragons in their basements, to arming themselves with sling shots and heading out on treacherous monster hunts to find their missing friend.
Our heroes are accompanied only by their companion, a very peculiar girl with phenomenal abilities. And this character in particular I believe was one of the biggest successes of of this series, as she straddles the line between adulthood and childhood. Throughout the series this young girl battles with herself as she is trying to reclaim her innocence. And yet is constantly haunted by the traumatizing evils of the world that has been forced upon her.
I immensely enjoyed watching the many twists and turns of this story unfold, as well as fell in love with the marvelous characters these writers created. This series has truly earned a place on my lists of favorites, and for anyone one looking for their next Netflix binge show I highly recommend this show to you because I promise you’ll be glued to your screen until the very end. But don’t fret about the series ending.. (The second has already been confirmed!).
