October is Breast Cancer Awareness month bringing light to various causes all in pursuit of the same goal: raise money for research to end breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness month has been an ongoing tradition since 1985, it lasts for the entire month of October. It started as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. It it meant to raise awareness for this heartbreaking disease as well as fundraise to support finding a cure. Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in someway, in 2017 alone around 30% of diagnosed cancers in women was breast cancer, this staggering statistic shows just how common it is to be affected by it.

The pink ribbon is the most commonly known symbol for breast cancer. The start of the ribbon came from the Susan G. Komen organization when the Cure®️ race was started. Their first logo was a female runner outlined with a pink ribbon, this was used during the mid 1980s and early 1990s. During this race pink ribbons were distributed to all participants to show solidarity were the survivors as well as one ones still fighting.

Countless people and places find ways to support this Cause. In past years important buildings around the globe  have shown their support by lighting up in pink. Some examples of this are, Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, The White House, Tokyo Tower, and the Empire State Building. Celebrities have also been doing their part to show support, such as Serena Williams. She produced a music video to kick off Breast Cancer awareness month. She sang a cover of “I Touch Myself” by the Australian rock band Diviynls. This campaign was used to remind viewers to be on the lookout for signs of Breast Cancer.

There are many ways to do your part as well by contributing to the awareness. The Susan. G. Komen organization holds many walks during this month and encourages people to get out and join the fight.
