That stuff that teachers’ dreams are made of…all eager to respond

Teachers’ dreams are the only other place where you will see as many students begging to be picked on to speak. Placards raised high and faces taut with determination, Patchogue-Medford Model United Nations recently hosted its 11th annual conference.

“Model UN has undoubtedly changed my life and it is an absolute honor to work with my peers and our advisor Ms Botta, to put on this event every single year.”, said Secretary General Ronald Lospenuso. The conference drew in well over 200 students from eleven high schools all over Long Island.

“Though the conference itself flashed by in two days, the preparation for such an endeavor consisted of toil since May of the last school year” said Ishika Patel, Webmaster and four-year participant of the club. “From writing and editing background guides to communicating with so many schools, it is extremely rewarding to see all our work culminate in such success.”

The Patchogue-Medford conference consisted of a multitude of committees, each with its own focus on a set of issues. These included a Human Rights Council focused on protecting freedom of access to information to even Historical Security Council which revolved around resolving the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

According to Lospenuso, “Though it is a tenet of this club to create a space where students can debate to their hearts’ desire, I think it is even greater that we are able to attract individuals of such diverse backgrounds, both culturally and based on interest.”

Justin Zhou, a chair for the General Assembly added “One of our main goals when organizing this conference is to appeal to this diversity, and we do that by providing a wide range of issues across a multitude of committees to debate upon.”

This conference is only the first of the school year and there are quite a few remaining. Patchogue-Medford’s next conference will be December 14th and 15th at Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School.
