With a great passion and love for science rooted in Mr. D’s chemistry class, Elizabeth decided
during her senior year of high school to attend Northeastern University to pursue a bachelor’s
degree in chemical engineering and biochemistry.
Not only was Northeastern University appealing to Elizabeth, but it also offered a Cooperative Education program, which led her to a
co-op at the BioMicro Center at M.I.T. from July to December 2023. A couple of months after
completing her first co-op, she came across a listing for a position at C.Ú.R.A.M., the Scientific
Foundation Ireland (S.F.I.) Research Centre for Medical Devices at the University of Galway in
Ireland.
For Elizabeth, the position in Ireland seemed like the perfect way to travel and grow as a
scientist—two things she loves.
Over the past few weeks, Elizabeth has been a guest speaker in
Mr. D’s honors chemistry classes, sharing her story and journey after high school.
During a recent interview with Elizabeth virtually, she shared her story and encouraged students
to pursue their own passions.
“Finding what you enjoy in high school is important,” she told Mr.
D’s second-period chemistry class, “because it guides you towards knowing what you might
want to do in the future.”
In the interview, she also recalled her high school days, including her
time in the pit orchestra, string ensemble, and her art hobbies, all of which she continues today
alongside her academic goals.
She explained that taking the opportunity in Ireland taught her many things and gave her a greater
sense of what she wants for the future. “Ireland’s different culture changed my perception on
work ethic and gave me greater independence,” she said.
Elizabeth also offered advice for those looking toward college, emphasizing that it’s more
valuable to portray personal growth and individuality over mere test scores.
“It’s not just about GPA or SAT scores; it’s about showing who you are as a person through your clubs and personal
essay,” she explained.
Regarding her future, Elizabeth hopes to pursue a master’s degree within the next two to three
years and to travel more— “hopefully Italy!”
As her final message to high school students, she says: “Don’t close your doors to
opportunities… stay focused and never give up.”
Elizabeth Niemiec’s story truly shows hard work, dedication, and passion—an important
reminder for PMHS students to keep working hard and explore new things!
