Various unique fashion statements were made at the 2025 Presidential Inauguration.
We saw everybody from Supreme Court Justices and Past and Present First Ladies show up in their best Americana attire. The rise of social media has put a spotlight on political figures; however, the ladies of politics have always been quite known to be fashion mavens.
The first major fashion socialite was Jackie Kennedy, the First Lady to President John F. Kennedy. She was an influential figure within Hollywood before her reign as First Lady. She was known for her eloquent style consisting of shift dresses, A-line skirts and pillbox hats, with her pink Chanel suit establishing her at an icon status.
Despite the popularity and status of headwear, we did not see a First Lady wear a hat proceeding Jackie Kennedy until twenty years later in 1981 when Nancy Reagan shined in her red two-piece, coining the term “Reagan Red”.
In recent years, we see Melania Trump following the same route of dazzling headwear. She sported a wide brim hat designed by Eric Javitz and a blue cashmere dress designed by Ralph Lauren. Melania Trump has been compared to the likes of Jackie Kennedy for her fabulous sense of style.
Melania Trump was not the only fashion fawn of the ceremony. Many people found the deep meaning of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s collar to be the talk of the night.
Her collar was inspired by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was known to express her emotion through the elaborate collars she adorned. Famously she was known for her dissent collars, which she wore when she was opposed to an opinion within her field.
The elaborate cowrie shell collar of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was not only a rich piece of history but also conveyed a story which is what the art of fashion is all about. I am eager and excited to see what’s next for these two trailblazers.
