ON THIS DAY: World Down Syndrome Day

While many have heard of Down Syndrome, most aren’t aware of what it really is; Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when one is born with a partial or full extra copy of chromosome 21. While normally one should possess 46 chromosomes in each of his or her cells, someone with Down Syndrome possesses 47 chromosomes in each of one’s cells.

As a result of possessing an extra chromosome, one inherits certain characteristics different from those with the typical 46 chromosomes. Some of these characteristics are physical and include small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and low muscle tone. It is also common that those with Down Syndrome experience intellectual delays. However, just because the rate at which one with the condition absorbs knowledge may be a bit slower than average, it does not mean that one is incapable of absorbing said knowledge. In fact, many with Down Syndrome participate in the same educational courses as those without the condition as they have proven such capabilities.

Despite the negative connotations attached to Down Syndrome, many with the condition have unique skills and talents just like those without the condition. This is because intellectual delays are not indicative individual talents. In addition, those with Down Syndrome experience the same range of emotions as anyone else. Furthermore, it is important to look beyond the perceived limits of Down Syndrome. On this day we recognize Down Syndrome and hopefully many have participated in Crazy Sock Day — one way to show your support.
