What’s been happening in national, international, local, and school news this week?

National News:

  • A supercolony of 1.5 million rare Adelie Penguins were discovered in Antarctica earlier this week. These elusive seabirds had lived undetected on an island around Antarctica for at least 2800 years.
  • The annual “White House Christmas Party for the Press” was cancelled by President Trump.
  • Two earthquakes struck down in Eastern Tennessee on Wednesday morning less than a half hour apart from each other. These level 4 earthquakes were felt hundreds of miles away in the surrounding states of Alabama, Kentucky, and North and South Carolina.
  • Las Vegas was officially named the host for the 2020 NFL Draft beating out all the finalists.
  • The Toronto Raptors beat the Golden State Warriors without Kawhi Leonard to sweep them in the Regular Season. This outcome could be foreshadowing the finals match up.

Local News:

  • Many commuters are in distress because of the placement of a holiday wreath on the Holland Tunnel sign. A small tree in the shape of an “A” was placed over the letter “N” instead of the shape it looked like, an “A”. Many people are actually requesting to have the sign taken down or changed.
  • Volunteers are rushing to Southold to save critically endangered sea turtles who have washed up on the sands of the North Fork.
  • A Burger Bar in Babylon is serving a dish never heard of before called “Peanut Butter and Jelly Wings” as well as a short rib poutine.
  • Marcus Stroman could possibly be traded to the Cincinnati Reds after playing for the Toronto Blue Jays for about 4 years.
  • A 16.58 million dollar library was just approved to be built by the voters in Bayport and Bluepoint.

International news:

  • A high speed train in Turkey crashed into a bridge killing several people.
  • In March 2019, South Africa will launch a satellite into space designed by several school girls through the STEM Program.
  • A 92 man who survived the Holocaust was struck and killed by a car crossing the street right near his house. Alter Wiener survived various concentration camps over the course of three years and later wrote an autobiography about his experience titled “From a Name to a Number: A Holocaust Survivor’s Autobiography.”

PMHS News:

  • A “Fry Daddy’s” Restaurant opened in Patchogue earlier this week. This franchise has been handing out fried foods of all sorts from a food truck in Patchogue and recently opened their own sit-down restaurant.
  • Our High School will be hosting a holiday spirit week next week with different themes relating to the holidays.
  • There will be a Board of Ed meeting on December 17 @ 7:30 pm @ Saxton Middle School.
  • The second Winter Concert will be December 19 in the HS auditorium @ 7pm.
  • Student Athlete of the Month: Alyssa Sacco, Field Hockey. Congrats!
