As a 16-year-old girl, I haven’t had a lot of things happen to me that I can consider “life changing” I’ve met people, experienced enough stuff, and heard so many people’s stories that have rendered me speechless to understand that life is full of them. At a class I’ve participated in for the last couple of years at St. Joseph’s college, I can honestly say my view on life has changed drastically. The class is called Herstory, and it takes place Thursdays 2:30-430 after school, you get to work with college students, and have the chance of publication. Being a partially normal self-entitled teenager, I’ve been through the run of the mill with tragedy and despair, met so many people with different stories of all kinds. The first few weeks of the class are a bit nerve wracking and awkward- as all new experiences usually tend to be with new people, but quickly the environment becomes a sort of safe haven, a place where you feel comfortable, and are able to say stuff you may not have been able to tell anyone else. in the beginning we are asked to write about something important to us, whether it’s a person or an experience that has greatly affected or changed our lives. It could be anything from a place to a person- even an object. we are asked to write this not only to get our story out there, but for the chance to connect to someone. To let people out in the world who might have had a similar experience to yours- understand that they are not alone. But what I have also discovered over the duration of this class is writing an experience down also helps you heal. So, if you’re interested in taking an amazing class and meeting even better people, go to your English teacher room and let her know. You won’t be disappointed!
