Baseball: America’s national pastime and first professional sport. Since its conception as a legitimized institution in the late 19th century, American baseball has risen to unprecedented levels of international prestige. But whether it be the world-famous New York Yankees facing off against the rival Boston Red Sox or two local tee-ball teams taking turns scrambling over a ground ball, it is no question that baseball has provided Americans of all ages with a unique aspect of their national identity.
This is no different for Patchogue-Medford. The high school’s varsity baseball team has continued to attract significant attention from scouts, students, and fans alike, and it has quickly become one of the district’s renowned organizations. Part of the team’s reputation can be owed to its many notable players who have continued to display their skill on the field.
When considering the talented individuals that have contributed to the team’s prestige, a name that immediately comes to mind for most is Josh Knoth, the 18-year-old pitcher who dazzled on the mound throughout his high school career and was drafted 33rd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in July of last year. However, because of Knoth’s recent departure from the team, some may assume that the group will not reach its powerhouse status that it has had in recent years.
But according to second baseman Matteo Martinez, this assumption would be incorrect. “Our season is going to go great,” he says. “It’s only a matter of time until we make playoffs and then we’re off to try our shot at back to back league titles and the county championship.” This confidence is not based on any unreasonable grounds, either. Knoth’s absence has not left a talent vacuum on the team by any means. Players Bryan Frascogna and Robbie Melo were recently featured in Newsday’s list of the top 100 baseball players on Long Island, and coach Anthony Frascogna has just recorded his 300th career win with the team – a testament to his experience and leadership capabilities.
So what does this mean for the remainder of the season?
Currently, the team stands at a 5-4 record after a recent decisive 5-1 victory over Central Islip. Rob Melo once again showcased a stellar pitching performance, notching 11 strikeouts on the night.
These kinds of performances can and should be expected to be commonplace throughout the rest of the Raider’s season for all members of the team. Coach Frascogna’s experience paired with outstanding talent on the field was what propelled the team to the winning the league title last season, and the players have only gotten better since then.
But don’t just take my word for it. Go out and support the Raiders in their pursuit of a county championship, and witness their talent firsthand!
