It’s Halloween night, you’re in your room alone in the dark. Suddenly, the phone rings, the number’s unknown. You pick up… the person on the other end asks for scary movie recommendations! What should you recommend? Here are some good movies, old and new, plus trilogies and remakes that will satisfy classics lovers and new age lovers.
A very new movie is Terrifier 3, a supernatural slasher horror movie centered around Art the clown bringing chaos upon residents of Miles County on Christmas Eve. The movie is quite gory, so for those with a weak stomach this might not be for you. There are two other movies in the trilogy, Terrifier 1 and 2, so this movie could also be great for a terrifying binge watch with friends, or alone if you’re brave!
One classic but, definitely not for horror movie rookies or faint-of-heart is The Exorcist, agreed upon by most to be the scariest horror movie out there. The Exorcist is a supernatural/religious horror movie where a little girl is possessed by a mysterious entity and her mother seeks help from two priests to help save her. The Exorcist was released in 1973, based off a 1971 novel, both the movie and novel were written/directed by William Blatty.
If you’re looking for a good trilogy, the Child’s Play series might be for you. It consists of seven movies and a TV series all centered around our favorite murderous doll Chucky, which are all supernatural slasher horror. The TV show, simply dubbed Chucky, has three seasons and twenty-four episodes, and takes place when Chucky gets put out at a yard sale and makes the once idyllic American town he was in spiral downwards.
Another movie newer to the scene is Speak No Evil, which is a psychological thriller. The movie focuses on a family on their way to spend a weekend in a lovely country house, yet they are oblivious to the fact that their vacation would become a nightmare. Speak No Evil was produced by Blumhouse, a company well-known for their horror films they’ve produced.
Yet another classic horror movie is Eraserhead. Made in 1977, Eraserhead is a surrealist horror film that hones in on the intense fear of parenthood and all that comes with the leap in life. The movie follows a man named Henry Spencer as he tries to survive his industrial surroundings during work, his upset girlfriend, and the ear-bleeding cries of his newborn mutant child. Although the movie is in black and white, it still packs a punch in the horror department.
Our last movie on this list is a well-known trilogy, the beloved Scream movies. With the original Scream movie being released in 1996 and the newest in 2023, there are six movies to choose from or binge with family or friends. The Scream movies are all slasher horror and feature a sort of “whodunit” style mystery, meaning you don’t know who the killer is and you don’t know who might be the next victim.
