The very next UFC Event, dubbed “Winner Takes All” is UFC 308, airing Saturday October 26 and will feature Ilia “El Matador” Topuria defending the Featherweight championship against Max “Blessed” Holloway. The backstory to this event couldn’t be deeper, and the stakes are higher for this division than they have ever been.
At UFC 298, Ilia Topuria took the Featherweight title from Alexander Volkanovski, who won the title from Max Holloway, and went on to defend it five times. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but that’s a good title reign and it cements Topuria as “titan” of the sport.
After a round five knockout to Justin Gaethje for the BMF title, Holloway and Topuria will go head to head in a “Winner Takes All” championship.
Now, Ilia is definitely a force to be reckoned with. He is a Greco-Roman wrestler with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but besides his deadly grappling, he has very good boxing technique and a heavy right overhand that has knocked out a lot of contenders.
Max Holloway on the other hand, started out as a kickboxer from a very young age and moved to MMA where he fought a lot of greats, like Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, and Alexander Volkonovski.
The problem with Topuria is that almost every one of his knockouts have been when he has an opponent against the cage. This could prove to be a problem because Holloway will not be easy to push back to the cage, and he likes to mix in roundhouse kicks (not to mention his spinning back kick). However, Topuria does have the grappling advantage as that was his main weapon before he started knocking people out.
So, who do you guys have winning in this hardcore showdown between these two UFC beasts? The legendary fighter who has been in the octagon with the greats, or the new prospect with the terrifying resume?
