Killcode is a southern rock/metal band from New York and they have toured and played in France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and across the U.S. Killcode has played with people and bands such as Twisted Sister, Skid Row, and Paul “Ace” Frehley (former guitarist of Kiss), and they have gotten to play at big music festivals with bands such as Five Finger Death Punch, P.O.D., Suicide Silence, and many more. Killcode has been doing some really awesome stuff and I had the opportunity to talk to lead singer, Tom Morrissey.

Caleb: “At what age did you decide you wanted to pursue a music career?”

Tom: “I always enjoyed singing and I always wanted to entertain. I grew up singing in choir and at parties and things of that nature, but when I was in my 20’s I was told I should take music more seriously and pursue a career in music; and one thing led to another and it all worked itself out.”

Caleb: “What bands/artists are most influential to you?”

Tom: “The Who, ACDC, Iron Maiden, and Zeppelin have been influential. I really like classic rock and/or rock with a punch to it.”

Caleb: “What is the song writing process like? How long does it take to write?”

Tom: “Song writing can be just us (the band) sitting in a room putting our heads together for ideas or a melody might pop into my head at a moment in time and I’ll bring it to the guys and we’ll expand off of that. Song writing always takes different lengths of time; a song can take a half hour or an hour or longer the time varies.”

Caleb: “What do you love the most about making music?”

Tom: “I love feeling accomplished and having the feeling of gratification when we finish writing a song; I also love to inspire people with our music, if people can relate to a song and feel the message of that song, that’s really awesome.”

Caleb: “What do you love most about being on stage?”

Tom: “I’m a shy person; but when I’m on stage I feel at home and I have a strong comfort zone and that’s one thing I love about being on stage.”

Caleb: “What is your favorite thing about touring?”

Tom: “We love going to new places and seeing/meeting new people.”

Caleb: “What is it like for you performing with big mainstream bands?”

Tom: “We feel really blessed to get to play at the same shows as the bands we grew up listening to; it’s part of the dream.”

Caleb: “What has been most rewarding?”

Tom: “Being able to make music/perform and the upward swing; the stages are getting bigger and better and making some money doesn’t hurt either.”

Caleb: “What advice would you give to people who want to have a career in music? What are some good ways to start out? How did you start?”

Tom: “Be smart, go into music because you love it and it brings you joy; if you can’t find joy in music at your worst, then don’t pursue a career in it. A good way to start is to write some songs and make sure you’re excited about it. I used to dabble in singing song covers at parties and never really thought of it as a career; people really liked it and told me to start getting serious about music because they thought it was possible for me to get a career in music.”

I recommend if you like the southern rock/metal genre to go check them out. Killcode is really good and the guys are really nice and cool as well.
