Set in Ireland in the late 90’s, Derry Girls stars with a main cast of four girls: Erin, Claire, Michelle, and Orla…. and one guy: James. This coming-of-age comedy just released its third and final season, ending with a showstopper. To spark your interest without giving too much away, there are multiple celebrity guest appearances (if you’re a fan of the Star Wars saga, you’ll enjoy.)

Derry Girls was almost a drama, and we’re thankful every day that it wasn’t. The show explores a wide range of societal problems, but does so in a comedic way that reaches their young target audience. In the late 90’s, Ireland was at war with itself, which is a pinpoint of the show. Contrasting between adult and teenage life during a war, Derry Girls is somehow able to give the audience a laugh about what growing up in the 90’s was like.

One scene that stands out is the final scene of season one. The teenagers are having a blast, dealing with the problems of regular teenagers at the school talent show. As this is going on, there is a bombing happening in their town that the parents are watching on television. Cutting between the two scenes, the show captures the difference in adult and child life. As the episode ends, the scene slowly fades with “Dreams” by The Cranberries playing in the background. A perfect end to a comedy and love filled first season.

So, if you’re looking for a new light-hearted show to watch, give Derry Girls a try. The seasons span 8 episodes, each episode being less than 30 minutes long. This show, while having you laughing, will reach your heart in a way that it hasn’t been reached in a long time.
