We all know who our favorite musicians, actors, athletes, and other professional figures are. However, how much do we really know about their past and how they became so successful? What events were turning points in their career? When did they begin practicing their craft? To whom do they credit their success? Unbeknownst to some, we have our very own rising star right here in Patchogue-Medford. He’s fifteen-years-old with a voice that leaves jaws on the floor. His name is Christian Guardino and he is one to watch. As a junior in high school, Christian has already performed at the famous Apollo Theater as well as a New York Islanders game. This may seem like a ridiculous task for a lot of people, but not for Christian.

When I sat down for lunch with Christian, I asked him how he received and handled such opportunities. He replied “My aunt stumbled across an amateur night online and I auditioned two weeks after my birthday. I practiced a song I was already very familiar with; “Who’s Loving You” by Michael Jackson. I became very nervous once we got there because the judges were really tough, but I met a producer there and he actually got me the gig at the hockey game. I was at lessons for that 24/7. I was terrified when I got there, but it was so exciting. Nobody booed me. So that’s a plus.” Those voice lessons paid off and Christian beautifully belted the Michael Jackson classic as well as our nation’s anthem. As great as his talent is, he didn’t become this successful overnight.

I asked Christian about his interest in singing and how he started, and because I have heard him sing so many times, his answer didn’t shock me. “I’ve been singing as long as I can remember. I always loved music so I have always felt the need to keep singing.

My favorite genre to listen to and perform is probably R&B and soul. It tells the best stories and is so different from other genres. As far as influence, Stevie Wonder. I relate to him on both a personal and musical level. He’s blind, and I had a disease that impaired my vision. He still writes genius music regardless of his struggle and his style is very cool.” Not only does Christian accomplish so many things at such a young age, but he hasn’t had it easy with his sight being impaired. In fact, he is legally blind. The eyes are quite important for a musician, but Christian is proof that with a lot of work and heart, success is possible regardless of health or other issues.

Having videos go viral on the internet and on social media, as well as performing in front of such big crowds, it might seem like a lot of pressure to most. Christian finds it easier to take a more relaxed approach. “I’m pretty laid back about it. I just want to sing. Whatever experience comes along, I’ll do my best and view it as an opportunity just as big as the NHL game and performing at The Apollo.” Any person with Christian’s amazing talent and outlook is bound to go far. To see this for yourself, you can find his performances on YouTube by simply typing in his name. Hopefully, his story will inspire others to persevere through difficult circumstances and find achievement in spite of challenges.
