Statistically speaking, a third of high school students in New York State are chronically absent from school and, according to the New York State School Boards Association, “Chronic absence is now more widespread and more concentrated than ever before,” based on data gathered by Attendance Works, a non-profit that advocates for policies and practices to improve school attendance.
Specifically in Suffolk County, 1 in 6 Suffolk County students were absent in the 2023-2024 school year. When students are missing this much school for any reason whatsoever (family vacations, sicknesses, etc…), it leaves students with immense stress and pressure to get back on task in all their classes. This is especially true at the secondary level, when students have a packed schedule and heavier workload to manage.
Scott, a PMHS junior, said, “Missing school, to me, feels like I’m taking a step in the wrong direction. When I miss a day, I sometimes end up falling behind in classes and it is hard to catch up”. For students in multiple AP or honors classes, even missing a class period could lead to missing important instruction or a lesson that teachers don’t usually have time to go back and review in a fast-paced class.
Consistent attendance gives many students a greater chance and success while also teaching them to manage a busy schedule both in school and outside of school.
PMHS junior and varsity athlete, MaryAgnes states, “Being at school as often as possible helps me stay on track in all of my classes and gives me time after school to focus on other activities I enjoy, rather than worrying about what work I missed or may have to make up”.
So, while missing school often can cause many students to feel overwhelmed or stressed, being present and attending school when you should, will ultimately lead to academic success and stress-free school days.
