On April 16th, Patchogue-Medford High School held their annual Humanities Awards Night to honor newly inducted students into the National English Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, to recognize students who obtained the Seal of Civic Readiness, and acknowledge a Patchogue-Medford senior for his excellence in American History.
Students inducted in the National English Honor Society were recognized for their exceptional and diverse achievements in the English language arts and related subjects as well as their passion for the subject. These students endured a rigorous application process involving several written works while having to maintain stellar grades.
The Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists commemorates individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publications, such as participation in Raider TV, the Red and Black, and the journalism course. The Quill and Scroll was first organized on April 10, 1926, meaning it recently passed its 100 year anniversary.
The Seal of Civic Readiness is a formal recognition that a student has attained a high level of proficiency in terms of civic knowledge, skills, mindset, and experiences. It shows students’ understanding of a commitment to participatory government, civic responsibility, and civic values. These students worked for several months alongside teachers and mentors after school to ensure they would become exemplary citizens as they embark on their journey as adults outside of high school.
National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Award for Excellence in American History was Awarded to senior Charles Monahan for his academic achievement, dedication to studying American history, and overall historical understanding.
The Humanities Awards night was a well-deserved celebration of students’ achievement and commitment to academic disciplines involving the humanities. Congratulations to all who were recognized!
