Celebrating Senior Night

Senior Day. One of the most anticipated nights for student athletes. Following tradition, the Raiders Girls Varsity Soccer (RGVS) team took to the field Friday night for their first home game and senior night all in one.  The girls prepared for Senior Day with baskets and posters to honor their teammates on their special day.  They walked around the halls showcasing their specially-made shirts for their seniors. The 11 seniors consists of: Jessica Collocola, Lilli Marin, Julia Grau, Jennifer Samaniego, Julia Lobue, Chloe Wilson, Melissa Baldwin, Maria Cliffe, Katherine Muy, Ally Beaty, and Madison Cruz.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with one of the seniors Lilli Marin and talk about her experience on the team as well as the upcoming season.

R&B: What has been your favorite moment on the RGVS team?

LM: My favorite moment so far being on the RGVS team was during my junior year, it was just after we made playoffs and that’s when I think we all realized we could beat any team if we put 100% effort into every play and pass and work as a team.

R&B: How do you think this sport has affected your high school experience?

LM: I think playing a sport during high school has showed me how to challenge myself in everything I do, and has helped me manage my time much better.

R&B: How does it feel to be a senior on the team?

LM: It feels surreal to be a senior, I don’t want to be cliche but everyone says “it goes by so fast” and you don’t really believe them but let me tell you, these past 4 years have gone by in a blink of an eye. It’s bittersweet to think I won’t be coming back here next year, but RGVS will always have a special place in my heart.

R&B: What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?

LM: This upcoming season I hope we make playoffs, but most of all I want to make memories with my girls that we will never forget. Whether that will be pasta parties before games, or hanging out after practice, and everything in between. I just want this season to be one we will never forget.

As the night progressed the coaches held a ceremony for the girls. Heartfelt speeches were shared about the countless memories that were made over the last few years, and smiles shone as tears were shed.

The girls put up a strong fight and played a tight game; unfortunately, the team lost to Connetquot 1-0.  Regardless, their undeniable teamwork makes it clear that big things are in their future. We are all cheering for you. Good luck on the rest of your season!
