Sister Act: A Divine Theater Experience

The Red & Black offers it’s take on PMHS’s most recent musical, Sister Act.

Patchogue Medford is known for producing stellar musicals each year, and this year was no exception. Sister Act was a well done and professional musical production that it’s easy to forget it was produced by a high school and not Broadway. The vocals and choreography were excellent, and the storytelling was touching.

Delores, played by Nicole Kelly, Sister Mary Robert, played by Emily Dutkiewicz, and Eddie, played by Dan Barna all did a phenomenal job playing as leads who really get the audience behind them. Although all the characters provided something memorable to the musical, my personal favorite was the antagonist, Curtis, who was played by Braden Elkins. His ability to tap into the cold, remorseless mobster was remarkable and memorable. Another favorite of mine was Jenna Fanelli’s role as Mother Superior. Her performance as the wise old nun was so convincing that I was under the impression it was being played by a teacher, only to be surprised when I opened the playbill to see she was played by a senior.

Sister Act was risqué, jam-packed with laughs, and even found great success in its more tender moments. The pit was amazing and the stage crew got a well-deserved round of applause. Even though they’re not seen, their efforts are and you can tell the hard work that was put into making every aspect perfect. Delores being accepted by Mother Superior was a heartwarming moment and a nice way to end this feel-good comedy. It’s surreal to think these talented and engaging performers have been sitting next to you in math class all year.
