Boys Varsity Soccer Team during playoffs.

The 16 seed Patchogue Medford Boys Varsity Soccer Team was set to face the 8 seed Connetquot at Connetquot High School in the Suffolk County Class AA Quarterfinal game.

Hot off an amazing victory against the 1 seed Brentwood, Patchogue Medford had proven to be a much better team that they appeared in the rankings.

Connetquot was also coming off a 2-1 OT win against 9 seed Center Reach.

After the announcing of both teams’ lineups and the playing of the National Anthem, the game began.

And it didn’t take long for the raiders to score. Just over 40 seconds into the game, junior captain Marco Muy scored a header off a corner kick to put the raiders up 1-0. After hitting the crossbar 3 times in the first 40 minutes, halftime came.

The second half came with a slow start until 19 minutes in when Connetquot responded with a goal of their own. And in a little over 4 minutes, Connetquot had put 2 more goals in to make the score 3-1. The Raiders gave it all they had, but in the end fell short. The game ended with a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to end the Raiders season.

As a member of the team myself, I would like to take a moment to say a few words.

To the underclassmen, this was an unfortunate way to end the season, a loss in the second round of the playoffs. But just look at what we accomplished. We started this season 1-3, nobody thought we had any shot at making the playoffs. But not only didn’t we make playoffs, we beat the #1 team in the state! And don’t worry, we’ll be back next year.
