OTD: Oreo Day – milk’s favorite cookie

Rejoice my fellow peers, as today on March 6th we celebrate a holiday which holds the very fabrics of this planet together, National Oreo Cookie Day. I mean how could we forget that craving we face whenever we see that tasty black cookie being dipped into that angelic creme white milk with the text “milk’s favorite cookie” coming across the end of the commercial. How could we resist ourselves from purposefully going against the recommending serving size labeled on the package because it was just that damn good. This is the reason why Oreos are the United States best selling cookie, and that is what this holiday is truly about, appreciating the cookie that made all our lives better. With that being said I’d like to go ahead and present you all with four fun facts about our nation’s beloved cookie.

Fact #1: Hydrox were Oreos before Oreos were Oreos

Allow me to elaborate on the confusing title, the brand Sunshine came out with a cookie called Hydrox that extremely resembles the Oreo and came out in 1908, four years before the Oreo was released. However, with the Oreo consuming the popularity of the market Hydrox was forever seen as the copycat.

Fact #2: Initially there wasn’t only chocolate Oreos

When the Oreo was first introduced into the market they were not alone, alongside that chocolatey goodness was a lemon meringue flavored counterpart which proved to be nowhere as successful as the black and white OG.

Fact #3: There is a science to the structure of the Oreo

The manufacturers who created the Oreo have created a precise system that makes the Oreo follow the ratio of cookie to creme to be 71:29. However, you can always opt to buy Double Stuff Oreos to get more of a bang for your buck.

Fact #4: It’s not technically “double” stuff

Do not be fooled by the text claiming that there is double the white creme stuffed within an Oreo as that is not the case. In fact a math class in 2013 found that it only contained 1.86 times more filling than the original.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this brief article regarding America’s sweetheart. Now go, run to your local grocery store, purchase a gallon of milk, and a package of Oreos and consume until you are no longer capable of moving, as it is the only way to truly honor this day.
